Large openings with localised concrete corbels and concrete placing channels

This method describes the construction of a large opening using localised concrete corbels and concrete placing channels.

To make the method shown in this document easier to understand, the insertion of GBE spacers used with formwork systems incorporating tie rods has intentionally been omitted from the explanatory diagrams.

This method must be adapted as necessary to comply with the installation recommendations, particularly the safety requirements, specified by the suppliers of the equipment and materials used to construct a GBE wall.

Phase 1:

Position the internal formwork panels.
Install the opening formers. Spaces between the formers are left to create concrete placing channels. Recess formers may be installed to protect the corners of the opening when the concrete formed within the placing channels is subsequently broken out.
Install the structural reinforcement using conventional reinforced-concrete construction methods.

Phase 2: Preparation of the insulation panels (carried out in parallel)

Form an opening through the insulation to allow concrete to pass through during casting, thereby creating a localised concrete corbel connecting the internal concrete leaf to the external concrete leaf.
Insert GBE internal connectors and external connectors.

NB: the dimensions and spacing of the localised concrete corbels must be determined by the structural engineering consultant.

Phase 2 - preparation of insulation panels and openings for localised concrete corbels

Phase 3:

Install the insulation panels incorporating the GBE components.
Insert reinforcement through the openings provided for the future concrete corbels.

Phase 4:

Install the reinforcement for the external concrete leaf.

Phase 5:

Position the external formwork panel, install the concrete placing hatches and tighten the formwork in accordance with the formwork manufacturer's recommendations.
Place the concrete simultaneously on both sides of the insulation, for the internal and external concrete leaves.

Phase 6:

Strip the formwork.
Break out the concrete formed within the placing channels. The recess formers help preserve the corners of the opening during this operation.
The localised concrete corbels remain within the GBE wall. Various solutions can be considered to conceal the exposed insulation at the opening, including concrete returns.
